• Call for Paper - The challenge of "rationality" and "commitment" within Emancipatory Education: Studies in "Pedagogical Problematicism"


    The thought of Giovanni Maria Bertin and the "Pedagogical Problematicism" approach he forged,
    aims to establish “the education challenge” as an essential issue for the whole of society.
    Studies adopting Problematicism as their theoretical framework build upon or argue in favour of two
    core notions: “rationality”, conceived of as a methodological horizon (i.e. a guideline for conferring
    meaning on education); and “commitment”, conceived of as fundamental to an ethical and political
    vision of education. This Call is addressed to scholars who deal with the complexity of educational issues and who have found in Problematicism a perspective with which to steer educational practice.
    This Special Issue will collect contributions related to Pedagogical Problematicism in order to
    disseminate this approach at an international level and to connect it with the current debate on
    Like other deleterious effects of globalisation, the coronavirus pandemic poses new questions to both
    education professionals and scholars, providing us with new and urgent issues to be analysed from
    the viewpoint of Problematicism.
    In the contemporary scenario, Pedagogy should be considered as an authoritative reference in the
    public debate, as a discipline capable of (re)orienting educational practices towards
    more autonomous and critical thought and as a scientific discipline at least as influential as the other
    human sciences.
    For these reasons, this Special Issue aims to highlight the categories of Bertin’s philosophy of
    education by applying them to contemporary dilemmas and emergencies.
    The analysis of innovative experiences developed in recent years and addressed by the Problematicist
    approach are very useful for deepening our understanding of the present.

    This Special Issue will focus on the following aspects:

    1. The possible interrelation between Problematicism and other internationally
    validated approaches in the philosophy of education.

    2. The analysis of specific categories of Problematicism connected with the
    complex challenges of society.

    3. The contribution of Problematicist Pedagogy to specific educational issues (e.g.
    inclusion, interculturalism, schooling, early school-leaving).

    4. The analysis of educational experiences and projects carried out in the frame of Problematicism in order to assess methodological innovations.

    5. Case study research, using Problematicism as a point of view with which to better
    understand reality.

    6. The reasons for linking the theoretical model of the Problematicist approach with
    devices and methodologies used in the educational environment.

    This Special Issue also intends to delve into the nature of the current contributions of Problematicist
    Pedagogy to the education sciences, following an interdisciplinary approach aimed at creating a
    dialogue with other human sciences.


    Call for Papers: Expressions of interest with a statement about the central idea should be
    submitted to the editors between 07 February 2021 and 08 March 2021. Authors are invited
    to include contact information.

    Between 09 March 2021 and 10 May 2021 authors have to submit an extended abstract
    (up to 1,000 words), in which the author should outline her or his contribution according to
    the contents of the special issue and following the present structure: Introduction & Topic;
    Theoretical framework, extant and relevant literature; Methodology; References. The papers
    have to include a biographical note (up to 75 words)

    Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified by 19 June 2021 and will then be invited to
    submit the full paper to the editors by 10 January 2022. Manuscripts should be no longer than 8,000 words (including notes and bibliographical references). Manuscripts should conform to the editorial conventions set by the American Psychological Association (APA Style Manual, 6th edition).

    All papers will be subject to anonymous peer review. The process of peer reviewing will
    presumably end by April 2022.

    After peer review, authors will have one month to correct their articles. The definitive version
    of the paper should be submitted by 20 June 2022.

    Launch of the Special issue in November/December 2022.
