Abstract

In the last few decades, Italy too has changed from being an emigration to an immigration country. There is therefore a real need for training in order to avoid forms of intolerance and cultural racism. Cultural establishments as well as educational institutions must provide for the development of knowledge and skills aimed at the peaceful coexistence of different peoples. Many Italian public libraries have taken on the challenge and have launched several appropriate initiatives since the early 90s – albeit with somewhat confusing terminology and lack of common aims. Should we talk about multiethnic or multicultural libraries? Multicultural or multiethnic service? Do different definitions imply different typologies?
